The Surgical Technology Program offers the graduate an opportunity to be an integral part of the surgical care team.  This is a para-profession with dignity and responsibility.  Entry-level job opportunities are available in hospitals, private practices and surgical departments.

Training Objectives

The primary goal of the Surgical Technology Program is to provide students with a learning environment that will enable them to acquire the (1) knowledge, (2) technical skills, and (3) behavioral components necessary for entry-level employment as a competent Surgical Technologist.  The surgical technology student is given a broad background in the basic sciences of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, pharmacology, and microbiology to serve as the foundation for the advanced subjects to follow. As the program progresses, the student learns the practical aspects of operating room procedures, sterilization techniques, instrument set-ups, vital signs, patient-care techniques, assessment and treatment of emergencies encountered during surgery, and professional growth. There is major emphasis on aseptic techniques and procedures throughout the entire program.

The Surgical Technology Program makes use of a fully equipped clinical skills lab with standard operating room equipment.

Program Goals, Requirements, & Coursework

The Surgical Technology Program will involve you in 680 hours of lecture, clinical instruction, followed by a 400 hour externship that will enable you to become thoroughly familiar with actual practice. As the program progresses, the student learns the various aspects of operating room procedure, sterilization,
instrument setup, vital signs, basic principles of medicine and surgery, patient care techniques, first and emergencies. Students are required to obtain a physical examination to include PPD and Hepatitis B series vaccination prior to their externship. By the end of the classroom instruction and externship, you will have received the training necessary to allow you to assume certain routine responsibilities in the operating room, including instrument setup, assisting the surgeon, and assisting with post-operative dressings.

The Surgical Technology Program is designed to meet the needs of the modern hospital department of surgery as well as the surgeon who performs out-patient surgery. FINANCING ASSISTANCE

The American Center has administrators on hand to help you obtain the financing for which you may qualify or to help you determine other avenues available to you in financing your education. We also work with the Veteran's Administration and the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation to assist you in applying for any of the benefits for which you may qualify.

PLACEMENT ASSISTANCE

The American Center has a Placement Assistance Office (PAO) to help you in your job search. The PAO provides training in resume preparation, interview techniques, dress and communication skills. Placement is for the purpose of obtaining a job. We expect graduates to fully cooperate by attending job interviews on time and by calling the PAO when the interview is complete.
