Training Objectives

Nursing Assistant Program's objective is to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to pass the State Competency Exam for Nursing Assistants and gain employment as a Nursing Assistant. The program curriculum reflects all of the current guideline requirements of the Nurse Aide Resident Abuse Training Act, which states that nurse aide training must give specific emphasis to identifying abuse situations, understanding what abuse is, and learning methods and techniques to prevent long-term-care resident abuse from occurring.  Throughout the training program, emphasis is placed on patient rights and the preservation of dignity and independence of long-term-care facility residents.

School Facilities

The Nursing Assistant Program includes a clinical skills lab equipped with standard patient care equipment used for practicing basic nursing skills and resident care procedures.  After completion of all class and lab sessions, students will be required to spend approximately 2 weeks at a nearby long-term-care facility where they will perform their clinical externship, under the supervision of a clinical instructor.  The clinical externship commences immediately after students complete all required classes; however, a short delay may occasionally occur at the discretion of the long-term-care facility.

Curriculum & Class Schedules

The morning session is designed to provide students with the opportunity for a quick career transition. Morning Classes meet four days a week, for four hours each day Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to noon. The program can be completed in approximately six weeks with the morning session.

The evening session is designed for working students seeking a career change. Evening classes meet three days a week, for three and a half hours each day, Monday through Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The program can be completed in approximately eight weeks with the evening session.

CPR Training and Certification

All students in the Nursing Assistant Program will be required to become trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation as a requirement for graduation from the program.  The training will be provided to students at no extra charge (fee is included in program tuition).

Certification Exam

Upon completion of the program, students are required to take the Pennsylvania State Nurse Aide Competency and Training Examination in order to become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).

The exam, which is administered by the American Red Cross, is given at the American Center school campus.  The fee for the Nurse Aide Competency Exam is included in the school tuition (for first testing only).
